Coherent Control of Ultracold Collisions with Chirped Light: Direction Matters
نویسنده
چکیده
We demonstrate the ability to coherently control ultracold atomic Rb collisions using frequencychirped light on the nanosecond time scale. For certain center frequencies of the chirp, the rate of inelastic trap-loss collisions induced by negatively chirped light is dramatically suppressed compared to the case of a positive chirp. We attribute this to a fundamental asymmetry in the system: an excited wavepacket always moves inward on the attractive molecular potential. For a positive chirp, the resonance condition moves outward in time, while for a negative chirp, it moves inward, in the same direction as the excited wavepacket; this allows multiple interactions between the wavepacket and the light, enabling the wavepacket to be returned coherently to the ground state. Classical and quantum calculations support this interpretation.

Control of ultracold collisions with frequency-chirped light.
We report on ultracold atomic collision experiments utilizing frequency-chirped laser light. A rapid chirp below the atomic resonance results in adiabatic excitation to an attractive molecular potential over a wide range of internuclear separation. This leads to a transient inelastic collision rate which is large compared to that obtained with fixed-frequency excitation. The combination of high...

We report on the dynamics of ultracold collisions induced by near-resonant frequency-chirped light. A series of identical chirped pulses, separated by a variable delay, is applied to an ultracold sample of Rb, and the rate of inelastic trap-loss collisions is measured. For small detunings of the chirped light below the atomic resonance, we observe that the rate of collisions induced by a given ...

Ultracold atoms, with their minimal spectral broadening and long interaction times, are ideal systems to explore and implement quantum state preparation and manipulation [1]. In particular, Raman processes in ultracold systems have proven to be a very useful tool in areas ranging from laser cooling and atom optics [2] to quantum information processing [3] and ultracold molecules [4]. The standa...

We investigate controlled collisions between trapped but separated ultracold atoms. The interaction between atoms is treated self-consistently using an energy-dependent delta-function pseudopotential model, whose validity we establish. At a critical separation, a “trap-induced shape resonance” between a molecular bound states and a vibrational eigenstate of the trap can occur. This resonance le...

The tools developed in this field allow for ultracold chemical reactions to be managed using magnetic fields1, light fields2 and spin-state manipulation of the colliding particles3 among other methods. Control of chemical reactions in ultracold atom-ion collisions is a young and growing fiel...
